PRACTICAL GUIDE
BYD not charging overnight: Octopus, Ohme and smart-charger checks
Missed an overnight charge? Follow a practical checklist for your BYD, charger and tariff: identify who controls charging, check targets and timers, and investigate failed starts or restarts without guessing.

A missed overnight charge does not automatically mean your BYD has gone to sleep. First check who controls charging: the energy supplier, the wallbox or the car. Then separate a session that never started from one that started, paused and failed to resume. This guide covers MyBYD’s seven fully electric models and explains charger/tariff checks, not universal vehicle compatibility. Follow your exact model’s handbook and the supplier’s current eligibility checker.

Choose a question to open its answer. Read this page’s vehicle scope and safety information before following any steps.
1. Which BYD models does this guide cover?
ATTO 2, ATTO 3, ATTO 3 EVO, DOLPHIN, DOLPHIN SURF, SEAL and SEALION 7. This is a general home-AC diagnostic route, not proof that every edition has direct smart-tariff support. DOLPHIN and DOLPHIN SURF are separate models; original ATTO 3 settings must not be inherited by ATTO 3 EVO. Choose your exact car and charger in the supplier’s live eligibility checker.
2. What should I check first?
Read the exact tariff name: Intelligent Octopus Go and Octopus Go are different products. In the supplier app, inspect the connected device and record whether control is through the car or charger. A charger connection does not necessarily know the car’s live battery percentage. Check whether the session never started, stopped at a target, or failed to resume after a pause. Read the controller explanation: https://www.mybyd.co.uk/byd-charging-controls-car-wallbox-app/
3. What should I record before changing anything?
Record model/year/trim, car software, exact wallbox model/firmware, tariff, car-versus-charger integration, plug-in time, actual starting battery level, target or amount to add, ready-by time, delivered kWh and the timestamped error. A created plan is not evidence of energy delivered. Keep VIN, address, account and serial numbers private; give them only to official support when needed. Never share passwords or verification codes.
4. Which ordinary restrictions can stop the session?
Check normal connector seating and any required per-session approval. Confirm the battery is below its target and a lower car cap has not already stopped charging. Record car timers, wallbox timers, solar-only settings and other charging automations. Remove conflicting schedules according to the selected integration, not by blindly disabling every setting. Retain required charger modes and load balancing.
5. Ohme Home Pro or ePod: where do I control Intelligent Octopus Go?
For charger integration, confirm Octopus Devices shows Ohme and set your charging request and ready-by time in Ohme. Avoid a second independent car timer as the public-source default. If Octopus shows the car instead, resolve the integration route first. Ohme describes requesting charger integration when onboarding does not offer it. Do not delete your account to diagnose one missed charge. Source: https://ohme-ev.com/support/troubleshooting-for-intelligent-octopus-go-and-ohme/
6. Does Ohme’s sleep setting mean the car cannot charge?
No: Ohme’s Sleep when inactive setting concerns its screen and lights. It is not proof that the car is asleep. If approval is required for each plug-in, approve that session. Ohme Home Pro uses mobile connectivity; generic advice to improve Wi-Fi is not automatically relevant. Sources: https://ohme-ev.com/support/how-can-i-keep-my-ohme-charger-secure/ and https://ohme-ev.com/support/my-car-isnt-charging-as-expected/
7. What does Ohme Suspended EV mean?
It indicates a vehicle-side restriction on accepting charge, not a confirmed universal BYD sleep defect. Check actual battery level, car cap, timers and recent setting changes. Ohme’s optional vehicle API connection for battery readings is separate from Octopus’s charger connection. Its troubleshooting describes testing without that optional link, which changes the request to an amount to add rather than a known final battery level. Record a short normal manual/Max AC test and its cost; restore smart control afterward. Source: https://ohme-ev.com/support/troubleshooting-suspended-ev-errors/
8. Why can Ohme stop below my requested target without a fault?
Where available, Prioritise savings can stop at the discounted charging allowance; Prioritise charge target can continue at a higher rate. Check whether the app lowered an unreachable target and read the session notification. A target shortfall due to a cap differs from a failed restart. Do not keep raising targets to conceal an unexplained problem. Source: https://ohme-ev.com/support/prioritise-savings-or-your-target-with-intelligent-octopus-go/
9. Zappi: should I use ECO+ or Fast?
Myenergi specifies ECO+ for zappi-controlled Intelligent Octopus Go, but Fast for a supported vehicle-controlled route. Do not use Stop. Check internet, clock/daylight-saving settings, firmware and required session authentication; remove competing timers. During an active slot, Charge delayed means the car has not accepted offered power. No delivered boost command suggests communication/control investigation instead. Do not copy solar-specific Minimum Green Level or delay values into this integration. 10. Hypervolt: what should I check?
Verify your exact hardware and firmware are eligible, then check online status and the Octopus request/ready-by time for charger integration. Hypervolt’s smart modes change for scheduled slots; do not force a competing solar-only mode. A locally stored plan can survive an internet interruption, but a new plan needs a connection. Price tracking alone does not prove supplier control is enabled. 11. Indra: which app holds the schedule?
For charger-controlled IOG, use Octopus preferences rather than an independent Indra timer. In a supported vehicle-controlled route, Indra documents Anytime / As full as possible availability settings; those are not instructions to charge the battery to 100% daily. Confirm the chosen route and never falsely select another car to bypass eligibility. Source: https://support.indra.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/29544001447069-Intelligent-Octopus-Go
12. Wallbox: what does Waiting for car demand mean?
Pulsar Max has a published IOG integration; that does not certify every Wallbox. Check your exact device. Waiting for car demand alone does not prove sleep. Follow Wallbox’s normal connector, network, firmware/app, schedule, lock and retry checks. Send persistent timestamped failures to Wallbox. 13. Andersen: does every model support the same tariff?
No blanket claim: Andersen’s tariff page identifies Quartz, A3 and 7kW A2 for its listed integrations. Check the exact variant, not merely the brand. Fixed-window charging uses your contracted window; a managed integration uses supplier control. A working local timer is not proof that IOG is paired. Source: https://andersen-ev.com/pages/tariffs-charging
14. Sync Energy: how do I check the route?
Use Octopus’s dedicated setup guide: the charger should already be configured in Sync, online and connected through the correct account/model. Preferences then belong to the documented Octopus flow. Returning control to Sync has reconnection requirements; do not repeatedly disconnect as a routine fix. Older coming-soon lists can be outdated. Source: https://octopus.energy/blog/intelligent-go-faqs/faq-syncenergy-signup/
15. Easee: is its own Smart Charging the same as IOG?
No. Easee’s price-based feature is distinct from supplier integration. Its help page directs users to disable that competing smart schedule once connected to the provider service and notes limits concerning IOG/OVO. This does not certify or reject every Easee installation: verify the exact hardware, operator and supplier route. Source: https://support.easee.com/hc/en-gb/articles/33123627163281-Smart-Charging-Information-and-Solutions
16. Octopus Charge home wallbox: what is different?
The home wallbox has its own documented pairing flow and uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Do not confuse it with the public-charging app or follow Ohme SIM advice. It does not automatically know the vehicle’s battery level: the car reaching its cap can stop delivery while the wallbox still requests charge. Manual mode is separate from smart scheduling and does not guarantee discounted billing. Sources: https://octopus.energy/blog/intelligent-go-faqs/octopus-charge-setup/ and https://octopus.energy/blog/octopus-charge-faqs/
17. What about Pod, Tesla, Rolec, EO, EVEC, Nexblue, Zaptec and other chargers?
This guide does not certify exact IOG setup instructions for these brands. Check current supplier eligibility and the manufacturer’s scheduling/approval instructions for your exact unit. A supported car-control route may be possible where charger control is not; otherwise examine a suitable fixed-window tariff. Never use unofficial firmware, false vehicle selection or wiring changes to imitate another charger. Special V2G bundles are outside this guide.
18. Does percentage to add mean my final battery target?
Not necessarily. Going from 40% to 80% requires a nominal 40 percentage-point addition—not an 80-point addition. Read the actual control wording and choose the correct battery/model. Charger-delivered energy and battery gain differ because of losses and power restrictions. Do not enter a false starting level to obtain longer cheap slots. Source: https://octopus.energy/evc-support/
19. How do I distinguish a smart-control problem from an AC charging fault?
If equipment is safe, perform a short supervised charge using the manufacturer’s normal manual control. Record start time, status, actual power/energy and cost; then restore smart control. Manual success narrows the problem but does not prove a vehicle defect. If charging first works, pauses and fails to resume, record that exact sequence. Another suitable AC charger can help support isolate the fault; successful DC charging alone does not test the same system. Never forcibly remove a locked cable or disconnect the 12V battery as a charging trick.
20. Is overnight Boost always cheap on Intelligent Octopus Go?
No. For accounts enabled for Octopus’s new arrangement, the EV allowance is up to six smart-charging hours midday-to-midday. Boost or charging beyond the allowance can be billed at the standard EV rate even at 02:00. Household off-peak electricity and eligible EV smart charging are different rules. Check your account’s rollout status and Charge Cap settings. Do not assume a manual overnight timer preserves the discount. 21. How does ordinary Octopus Go differ?
It is fixed-window charging rather than IOG’s managed scheduling. Align one supported car or charger timer with your actual contract and correct clock/daylight-saving settings. Check the current agreement rather than copying an old rate/window screenshot. Source: https://octopus.energy/smart/go/
22. What changes with OVO Charge Anytime?
Use its supported vehicle/charger integration. It is eligible managed EV charging with credits or plan allowances, not a cheap overnight rate for the whole home. Urgent overrides use the underlying home tariff rather than the smart benefit. Check the exact plan and solar conditions; do not transfer Octopus settings. 23. What changes with E.ON Next Drive Smart?
Use its supported app and exact EV/charger route. Next Drive Smart is different from fixed-window Next Drive; do not transplant timer instructions between them or infer charger eligibility from another supplier. Confirm the current contract and live compatibility list. Sources: https://www.eonnext.com/tariffs/next-drive/smart and https://www.eonnext.com/tariffs/next-drive/smart/support
24. What changes with EDF GoElectric?
The fixed overnight product and optional Smart Charging bolt-on are different setups. Without managed control, align a supported timer with your agreement. With the bolt-on, follow EDF’s supplier-control instructions without competing timers, checking exact compatibility and required connectivity. 25. What about ScottishPower, British Gas or variable-price tariffs?
ScottishPower EV Optimise uses managed charging and is separate from fixed-window EV Saver: follow pairing and avoid another control service. British Gas fixed-window products need a supported timer aligned with your contract. Agile and other variable-price configurations require verified price/control logic; a fixed overnight timer is not automatically cheapest. Sources: https://www.scottishpower.co.uk/support-centre/ev-optimise and https://www.britishgas.co.uk/energy/ev-tariff.html
26. Can I use a timer workaround shared in a Facebook group?
Do not treat it as a universal instruction. Ohme’s public default removes competing vehicle timers; an exception needs documented guidance for your exact car/software/charger route. Owner reports describe symptoms, not a confirmed cause. Neither opening the BYD app overnight nor installing one software version is a verified cure for every configuration. Solar phase-switching problems are a different trigger; give support the relevant logs rather than changing electrical settings.
27. What if I need the car tomorrow?
Check the actual battery early enough to act. If safe, use an approved manual charge or suitable alternative location, accepting its applicable cost. Confirm billing before adopting a temporary timer. Restore the intended smart setup afterward. For damaged equipment, unusual heat, burning smells or repeated protective-device trips, stop using it and contact the provider/qualified installer. Do not open the wallbox, move CT clamps, disable load balancing or repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
28. What should I send support?
My [model/year/software] uses [charger/firmware] on [tariff], controlled through [car/charger]. Actual battery was [x%], request was [target/amount], ready by [time]. It [never started/stopped after first slot/stopped at x%]. At [time] the status was [message]. A manual AC test at [time] [did/did not] deliver [kWh]. Please check whether the start/resume command arrived and the vehicle accepted it; confirm any workaround for this exact setup. Start with the supplier for pairing/plans/billing, the charger provider for offline/errors, and BYD for repeated refusal of offered AC after checks. OTA arrival by VIN is a separate issue.
29. Why does my BYD stop charging at 80%?
An 80% reading alone does not identify the cause or prove that your car has an automatic 80% limit. First distinguish a paused or ended session from charging that is still running at a lower power. Record the battery percentage shown by the car, the charger status and any message before changing settings. Check the target and schedule actually selected in the charger or tariff app. In Ohme, “top up by” means an amount to add, not the final battery level: starting at 30% and adding 50% aims for 80%. A “charge to” target is different; use the mode and capabilities actually shown for your setup rather than assuming an app can read your car’s battery. If the session ends unexpectedly below your requested target, record its times and energy delivered and use the relevant charger checks above. For a vehicle warning or an equipment fault, follow the exact handbook and contact the appropriate support service; do not bypass protections or try a generic reset.
