BYD not charging overnight: Octopus, Ohme and smart-charger checks

If your BYD misses an overnight charge, check which device controls it and whether energy ever started flowing. Then check the target, ready-by time and any competing timer before changing the car.

My BYD not charging
  1. Read the exact tariff name and the device paired to it: car or charger.
  2. Check actual battery level against the final target or amount to add. Safety note: If a plug is damaged, unusually hot, smells burnt or shows smoke or arcing, stop using it and keep clear. Repeated electrical trips need the installer; reconnecting can worsen an electrical fault.
  3. Confirm the charger is online, unlocked and has any required session approval.
  4. Use the selected integration’s approved settings for timers, solar modes and limits.
  5. Compare the planned slots with actual delivered kWh, including any failed resume after a pause.
  6. If needed and equipment is sound, try a short provider-approved manual AC charge, checking its cost, then restore smart control.

Ohme: start here

For Ohme charger integration, Octopus Devices should show Ohme; set the request and ready-by time in Ohme. Sleep when inactive concerns the charger’s lights/screen, not whether the car can accept charge. Suspended EV means the car is declining power: check actual level, fitted cap and timers. Ohme’s optional car-data link is separate; its support procedure can test without it, but the request then becomes an amount to add. Top up by 50 points from 30% aims for 80%; charge to 80% is different.

Targets and the smart-charging allowance

Where the new Intelligent Octopus Go arrangement is enabled, the EV allowance is up to six smart hours midday-to-midday. Boost or extra time can use the standard EV rate even overnight. Check the account’s rollout status, Charge Cap and Ohme’s Prioritise savings versus Prioritise target. Household off-peak and managed EV billing are different. Ordinary Octopus Go uses the contracted fixed window instead.

Zappi and Hypervolt

For zappi-controlled IOG, myenergi specifies ECO+; a supported car-controlled route uses Fast, not Stop. Check its clock/daylight saving, network, firmware and authentication. Charge delayed during an active slot means the car declined offered power. Hypervolt eligibility depends on hardware/firmware; its integration controls the smart modes, and price tracking alone is not supplier pairing. A stored plan may survive loss of internet, but a new plan needs connectivity.

Indra, Wallbox, Andersen and Sync

For Indra charger-controlled IOG, use Octopus preferences. Its vehicle-controlled availability setting is not a daily 100% battery instruction. Wallbox’s published Pulsar Max integration does not cover every Wallbox; check network, locks, schedule and exact model. Andersen lists particular Quartz, A3 and 7 kW A2 integrations. Sync needs its charger configured and online before the documented Octopus pairing; follow its reconnection instructions when changing control.

Easee and Octopus Charge

Easee’s own price-based Smart Charging is separate from a supplier integration; follow its guidance on competing schedules and exact supported route. The Octopus Charge home wallbox uses its own pairing flow and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, unlike Ohme’s mobile connection. It does not automatically know the car’s battery level. Its manual mode is separate from smart billing.

Other chargers and suppliers

For Pod, Tesla, Rolec, EO, EVEC, Nexblue, Zaptec and other hardware, use the current supplier compatibility checker. A supported car route may differ from charger control. OVO Charge Anytime uses managed charging benefits rather than a whole-home overnight rate; urgent overrides use the home tariff. E.ON Next Drive Smart differs from fixed-window Next Drive. EDF’s optional managed bolt-on differs from fixed GoElectric. ScottishPower EV Optimise differs from EV Saver; British Gas fixed windows follow the contract. Agile needs price-aware control rather than an assumed cheapest overnight timer. Check each provider’s own current route and solar conditions.

If you need charge for tomorrow

Check the battery early enough to use a normal permitted manual charge or a suitable alternative, at its applicable price. Opening the BYD app has helped some owners with an apparent wake issue, but it is an observation for an exact setup, not a dependable overnight plan. Keep confirmed owner-specific workarounds with their model/software conditions and provider advice.

If that did not work

Use the supplier for pairing, plans and billing; the charger provider for offline/errors; BYD for repeated refusal of offered AC after normal checks. Ask whether the start/resume command arrived and whether the car accepted it. Successful DC charging alone does not test the same AC path.

What to note down for support: For an unresolved case, send model/year/software, charger/firmware, tariff and controller, starting level, target wording, ready-by time, slot/error times and manual-test kWh. Give account identifiers only through official support.
