BYD UK sales growth: what the headline means for owners

What BYD reported

BYD UK reported 11,271 registrations in September 2025, an 880% increase compared with September 2024. It said the UK became BYD’s largest market outside China for the first time, with September market share of 3.6% and year-to-date 2025 market share of 2.2%.

The company also reported more than 16,000 UK registrations in the third quarter, compared with 10,000 in the second quarter, and just over 35,000 registrations across 2025 to that date. Its release described these as preliminary figures pending the official SMMT release.

Which vehicles drove the result?

The SEAL U DM-i plug-in hybrid led BYD’s UK volume, with 7,524 registrations between July and September 2025. The fully electric SEALION 7 followed with 2,599 registrations over the same period. That distinction matters: the headline total combined BYD’s electric and plug-in-hybrid range rather than measuring battery-electric cars alone.

What 880% does—and does not—mean

A very large percentage rise reflects rapid expansion from a much smaller September 2024 base. The final number—11,271 registrations—provides the scale that the percentage cannot show by itself. It is a useful dated market signal, not a forecast and not a measure of reliability, owner satisfaction or workshop performance.

Why owners may care

• A larger vehicle population can support more dealer, technician and parts investment.
• Growth can also put short-term pressure on servicing, body repair and parts supply if local capacity lags registrations.
• The sales mix helps explain why dealer knowledge may be stronger for high-volume models than for less common variants.
• Owners should still judge support locally: ask about workshop lead times, courtesy cars, parts availability and escalation routes.
