BYD breakdown on a motorway: people first, car second
Know the difference between reaching relative safety and being unable to leave the car safely. Official motorway guidance first; BYD recovery and vehicle procedures afterwards.

If you are in immediate danger, call 999 rather than reading a troubleshooting guide. A motorway breakdown is first a people-and-traffic safety problem, not a chance to experiment with resets, charging or tyre repairs. Follow the emergency operator’s instructions. The official sources below explain what to do when you can reach relative safety and when you cannot safely leave the vehicle.
- If the vehicle develops a problem, leave the carriageway at an exit or service area if possible. If not, official guidance is to move left towards an emergency area or hard shoulder where available, stop as far left as possible and use hazards. Do not keep driving contrary to a critical vehicle warning.
- If it is safe and possible to leave, exit on the side away from traffic and get well away from the vehicle and carriageway, behind a barrier where safe. Be alert to drops and other hazards. Do not stand where a collision could push your car into you.
- Do not attempt motorway repairs, put a warning triangle on the motorway or return to the car simply because the weather is unpleasant. Follow the official advice for passengers and animals; tell the emergency operator if anyone is unable to get to safety.
- Once safe, use the roadside emergency telephone where available or contact the appropriate road operator and your breakdown service. In immediate danger, or where you cannot leave safely, use 999. On England’s network, National Highways’ published contact is 0300 123 5000.
- Give the road, direction of travel, nearest junction or driver-location marker if known, whether you are in a live lane or an emergency area, and any passenger support needs. Do not walk into danger to find a marker or retrieve paperwork.
- Tell recovery that the vehicle is a BYD battery-electric car and give the exact model and symptoms. Use the correct handbook/recovery procedure; do not assume another model’s towing, neutral-release or 12V instructions apply. Ask about eligibility and any non-emergency costs through official support.
- Do not leave a motorway emergency area without first speaking to the road operator. Wait for the instructions needed for a safe departure rather than deciding the road looks clear enough.
Is an empty traction battery different from another motorway breakdown?
It still creates the same immediate traffic-safety problem. Do not start searching for a portable charging workaround while exposed to moving traffic. Get appropriate help first.
Should I reset the car or try the repair kit on the hard shoulder?
This guide does not instruct roadside resets or repairs. Motorway safety and professional assistance come before diagnosis or a model-specific repair procedure.
Which information helps the recovery team most?
Your safe location, exact model, visible warning or symptom and the needs of the people travelling. A photo or vehicle document is useful only if it can be obtained without approaching danger.
Does the SOS button arrange ordinary breakdown recovery?
Do not assume an emergency call and a breakdown-service call are interchangeable. Follow the official guidance for the situation and the correct vehicle instructions; use 999 when there is immediate danger.
