OWNER ANSWER

How long does it take to charge a BYD?

A practical guide to the factors that affect BYD charging time, with model-specific figures kept separate from general guidance.

Charging time is not one fixed number for every BYD. BYD UK says it depends on battery capacity, the charger’s power, the battery’s state of charge and conditions such as temperature. Use the current UK specification for your exact model and trim when you need a quoted charging time. Treat general examples as planning guidance, because charging commonly slows as the battery approaches a high state of charge.

  1. Start with the exact BYD model, trim and model year you drive.
  2. Check the current official UK specification for its stated AC and DC charging information.
  3. Plan around the charger’s power, your battery’s current state of charge and the conditions on the day.
  4. Leave time in your journey plan for charging to slow as the battery approaches a high state of charge.

Why is my BYD charging slowly?

First establish what “slow” means in this session. While safely parked, record the charger’s status, the displayed charging power, the battery percentage and whether delivered energy is increasing. Slow charging, a scheduled pause and a session that has ended are different situations. These observations help describe the problem; they do not diagnose a battery or charger fault. Read the safety notice above before continuing.

Does a powerful public charger guarantee its advertised charging speed?

No. GRIDSERVE explains that the charger offers a maximum, while the vehicle determines what it can accept. A peak figure is not a constant speed throughout the session. Shared equipment and site capacity can also reduce available power. Compare your exact vehicle’s published capability and the actual connector being used, not just the largest number advertised for the site.

Can battery level and temperature make charging slower?

Yes. BYD UK identifies battery state of charge and temperature as factors affecting charging time; power commonly falls as the battery approaches full. That does not prove every slow session is normal. Do not infer one fixed percentage threshold or a shared preconditioning procedure for all seven models.

Why can home AC charging be slower than rapid DC charging?

They are different charging routes. Do not compare a home AC session against your car’s headline DC rapid-charging figure. Use the AC capability of your exact vehicle and the installed charger’s permitted output. Ohme notes that a reduced vehicle charge-rate setting, where the vehicle provides one, can also reduce speed. Do not assume every BYD has the same setting or menu.

What should an Ohme owner check before changing charge settings?

Record the selected schedule, target and any reduced-rate setting your exact car actually provides. Ohme’s advanced-settings guide describes its firmware, configured charging current and CT-clamp reading, where fitted. Load-balancing configuration and its limit belong with the installer. Do not increase an installation limit or disable protection to chase speed; ask the installer about unexplained configuration limits.

Is paused charging the same as slow charging?

No. Check the displayed session state rather than assuming a low or zero reading means the car has gone to sleep. Record whether the session is waiting, paused, ended or actively delivering energy, together with its timestamps. For a missed smart slot or failed restart, use the separate smart-charging checklist: https://www.mybyd.co.uk/byd-octopus-smart-charging-not-working/ . Keep tariff-control questions separate from an equipment or vehicle warning.

What information should I record about unexpectedly slow charging?

Keep the model, trim, model year, software version, AC or DC route, charger location or model, starting battery percentage, displayed power, delivered energy, session times and exact messages. Note whether power changed during the session. Do not post your VIN, address, account details or unredacted screenshots publicly. Share identifiers privately with official support only when needed.

What should I do if charging remains unexpectedly slow?

For a public session, give the operator the charger and connector identification and the recorded session details. For a home-charger configuration question, use the charger provider or installer. A persistent vehicle warning or suspected vehicle fault needs the exact handbook and appropriate BYD support. Do not bypass protections, force a connector or try a battery-reset workaround. Use the support-report checklist linked below.
