BYD SEAL UK service schedule: 20,000 and 40,000 miles explained

The short answer

The current right-hand-drive BYD SEAL owner's manual schedules maintenance by time or mileage, whichever comes first. The main interval is every 24 months or 20,000 miles.

What is scheduled at 24 months or 20,000 miles

The manual calls for checks of:

• brake pads and discs;
• brake pipes and hoses;
• steering wheel and tie rod;
• drive-shaft boots;
• ball joints or pins and protective boots;
• front and rear suspension;
• tyre condition and pressure, including TPMS;
• tyre wear, with alignment investigation where uneven wear exceeds the manual's limit, and rotation where necessary;
• EPS connectors and grounding points for corrosion, foreign material or heat damage;
• expansion-tank coolant level;
• brake fluid;
• the high-voltage battery tray, crash bar, shield and explosion-proof valve for impact damage or deformation, plus powertrain leaks;
• the cabin or A/C filter, replacing it if necessary.

The manual separately specifies:

• Brake fluid: replace every 24 months or 20,000 miles.
• Transmission gear oil and filter: replace for the first time at 24 months or 20,000 miles.

What this means at 48 months or around 40,000 miles

The 24-month/20,000-mile inspection items become due again when the next time or mileage threshold is reached. Brake fluid is also on the same replacement interval.

After its first replacement, the manual schedules transmission gear oil and filter every 24 months or 30,000 miles, so the time threshold may make it due again at 48 months even when the odometer is below 50,000 miles. Ask the workshop to state which time and mileage entries it applied.

Longer interval item

The manual schedules replacement of the long-life organic-acid drive-motor coolant every six years or 60,000 miles.

Why quotations may differ

A quotation may legitimately change where the exact model year, vehicle handbook, previous service history or severe-use conditions differ. Optional repairs or wear items should not be presented as though they are automatically required by the scheduled service.

Before authorising work, ask the service centre for:

1. The maintenance schedule revision used for the vehicle's VIN.
2. A line-by-line split between scheduled replacements, scheduled inspections and condition-based recommendations.
3. The specification and quantity of any fluid being replaced.
4. Written confirmation of any additional work and why it is needed.

Owner preparation

Take the service record, registration or VIN, current mileage and date of the previous service. Keep the final invoice and completed service record, particularly because BYD Assistance extensions refer to following the scheduled maintenance plan at an authorised repairer.
