BYD DOLPHIN SURF real-world range: why journeys differ
For DOLPHIN SURF, compare actual journey consumption and conditions before judging a change in the range display. Cold weather, short journeys, speed, hills and cabin equipment can all change the distance available from a charge.

- Compare ordinary completed journeys with similar routes, speed and load.
- Keep the same distance units. Safety note: Keep enough charge for your trip and take notes only after parking. There is no need to run the battery low to test a prediction.
- If investigating a persistent change, note battery percentage before departure and after parking at the destination.
- Compare miles travelled and displayed trip consumption alongside temperature and cabin heating or cooling.
Why short winter trips differ
The RHD 07.2024 EN_V0 handbook, PDF 85 (printed 84), explains that battery heating can be less effective over short cold trips and that available battery energy falls in low temperatures. Repeated acceleration and deceleration, rough roads, long slopes and higher speeds also affect range.
Which display setting?
This SURF source describes battery and journey factors, rather than a Standard/Dynamic selector. Use your own SURF controls rather than copying a SEAL or original ATTO 3 menu. The larger DOLPHIN has separate guidance.
If that did not work
If a large unexplained change remains under similar conditions, charging behaves unexpectedly or a warning appears, ask BYD to inspect the car. Actual journey consumption helps explain the symptom; a displayed range number alone cannot measure battery health.
