BYD DOLPHIN scheduled charging did not start: safe UK checklist
BYD DOLPHIN did not begin charging overnight? Safely test the car schedule, wallbox schedule and immediate AC charging.

A missed overnight session is not automatically a sleeping-car fault. First record whether the DOLPHIN, charger or tariff service was waiting, then check your equipment’s approved scheduling setup. The cited handbook limits use of the vehicle timer with non-BYD-certified slow AC equipment. Any immediate-charge comparison must be safe, provider-permitted and checked for extra costs.
- Park safely. Do not continue if the cable, connector or inlet is damaged, unusually hot, wet inside or contaminated, or the vehicle shows a charging-system warning. Do not touch terminals or attempt a repair.
- Save the vehicle, wallbox and provider schedule settings and record what each app or screen says. Check the exact equipment’s approved setup before changing timers.
- Read the handbook compatibility caution below. Do not assume the DOLPHIN’s vehicle timer is suitable for a third-party wallbox.
- If safe and permitted by your charger or tariff provider, use its normal immediate-charge option to distinguish a waiting schedule from a failure to charge. Check extra-cost and eligibility conditions first.
- If immediate AC charging works, end the test normally and restore the provider-approved schedule arrangement. If an approved scheduled test is needed, follow that equipment’s instructions and confirm the result rather than assuming a saved timer guarantees delivery.
- If immediate charging fails too, or a vehicle fault repeats, stop treating it as only a timer problem. Save the messages and contact the operator or authorised BYD repairer; seek assistance if there is not enough charge for a safe journey.
Five-minute charging check
This is a MyBYD evidence-gathering checklist, not an official timed diagnostic procedure. It does not require an OBD accessory change or a universal 10–15 minute reservation. • Park safely. Do not continue if the cable, connector or inlet is damaged, unusually hot, wet inside or contaminated, or the vehicle shows a charging-system warning. Do not touch terminals or attempt a repair. • Save the vehicle, wallbox and provider schedule settings and record what each app or screen says. Check the exact equipment’s approved setup before changing timers. • Read the handbook compatibility caution below. Check extra-cost and eligibility conditions first. • If immediate AC charging works, end the test normally and restore the provider-approved schedule arrangement. If an approved scheduled test is needed, follow that equipment’s instructions and confirm the result rather than assuming a saved timer guarantees delivery. • If immediate charging fails too, or a vehicle fault repeats, stop treating it as only a timer problem. Why two schedules cause confusion
A saved timer in one system does not show that the other has authorised or accepted charging. The checked DOLPHIN handbook’s printed page 88 expressly limits the vehicle scheduled-charging function to BYD slow AC equipment and instructs disabling it with non-BYD-certified slow AC equipment. So do not assume that either timer will work with your wallbox. Confirm which setup is approved for your exact charger, vehicle edition and tariff with the equipment or tariff provider.
Checks owners often miss
In the checked edition, scheduled charging and scheduled departure cannot be active together. The instant-charge reminder applies only to the current schedule; it is not cancellation of all future schedules. The vehicle’s schedule does not control a DC rapid-charge session. Very low charge may trigger different behaviour. These are handbook boundaries, not instructions to recreate a low-battery condition or a promise that every DOLPHIN software version has identical controls.
If immediate charging also fails
Do not force a connector, repeat factory resets or bypass warnings. If it is safe and practical, observations from an independent compatible charge point can help support distinguish equipment-specific from repeated faults; one successful test is a clue, not proof of a cause. What to send support
Send the DOLPHIN model year/trim, full software version, charger and provider details, original schedule settings, exact messages and whether immediate AC charging worked. Record dates/times and state of charge; do not recreate a dangerous fault. The cited charging safety and schedule sections were reviewed on 15 October 2026. Match your supplied handbook and equipment instructions. This does not guarantee tariff eligibility or that an overnight session will complete.
