Check whether BYD smartwatch controls suit your phone, watch, account and vehicle before depending on remote functions from your wrist.

  1. Confirm that Digital Key appears for the exact vehicle in the current BYD app.
  2. Add and activate the main Digital Key on the compatible iPhone by following BYD’s in-app hand-off to Apple Wallet.
  3. When prompted, add the key to the nearby paired and unlocked Apple Watch. If it was not added during setup, open the Watch app on the iPhone, choose Wallet, find the car key and select Add.
  4. Test locking, unlocking and start authorisation beside the parked car while carrying the physical key.
Which smartwatch does BYD officially name?

BYD currently names Apple Watch for wearable Digital Key support. Its European instructions list iPhone XS or later and Apple Watch Series 5 or later. BYD’s published Samsung and Google sections describe compatible Galaxy and Pixel phones; they do not make the same general promise for Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch. Do not assume that mirrored notifications or a third-party watch shortcut can unlock or start the car.

How Apple Watch Digital Key works

• Confirm that Digital Key appears for the exact vehicle in the current BYD app. • Add and activate the main Digital Key on the compatible iPhone by following BYD’s in-app hand-off to Apple Wallet. • When prompted, add the key to the nearby paired and unlocked Apple Watch. If it was not added during setup, open the Watch app on the iPhone, choose Wallet, find the car key and select Add. • Test locking, unlocking and start authorisation beside the parked car while carrying the physical key.

Compatibility checklist

• Country: BYD lists the UK among supported European countries. • Phone: iPhone XS or later according to BYD’s current European page. • Watch: Apple Watch Series 5 or later according to the same page. • Vehicle: it must offer BYD Digital Key; availability can differ by model, model year, hardware and software. • Account and app: the vehicle must be correctly linked and the current BYD app must show the Digital Key tile.

If Digital Key does not appear

Updating the watch alone will not add support. First check the BYD app on the phone, the vehicle’s account binding and the exact model’s manual. If the tile remains absent, ask BYD or the supplying retailer whether that UK vehicle and software branch supports Digital Key. Do not install unofficial apps, profiles or wallet passes.

Notifications are not a car key

A watch can mirror phone notifications without holding a valid NFC car key. Treat the watch as a key only after the car key is visible in the supported wallet, activation has completed and it has been tested safely beside the vehicle.

Protect and remove watch access

Use a watch passcode and keep wrist detection enabled. If the watch is lost, sold or sent for repair, remove the car key from the wallet and BYD account promptly. Keep a physical key available; Digital Key convenience should not become the only way to access the vehicle.
