Read the whole message, not only the symbol

The icon colour, accompanying words, whether it stays on and how the car behaves are all important. A changed layout after an update is different from a new fault warning.

Safe checks while parked

1. Stop in a safe place and photograph the complete display.
2. Note the time, outside temperature, battery level and what the vehicle was doing.
3. Check whether the message clears after the vehicle is switched off, locked and allowed to shut down normally.
4. Open the warning-lights section of the manual for the exact model.
5. Check recent settings or software changes, but do not clear evidence by repeatedly restarting the car.

What the warning colour suggests

• Red or stop instruction: follow the displayed instruction and obtain assistance; do not continue merely because the car still moves.
• Amber: a system needs attention. Drive only if the manual and vehicle behaviour indicate it is safe, and arrange diagnosis if it persists.
• Green, blue or white: this is commonly a status indicator, but confirm unfamiliar symbols in the manual.

After an update

While parked, recheck brightness, units, driver-assistance preferences and the selected information layout. If the display is blank, repeatedly reboots, loses speed information or shows braking, steering, restraint or high-voltage warnings, record a short video and seek assistance.
